Risk of Losing Nipple Sensation After Breast Implants

There is a bit of a misconception out there when it comes to the risk of losing nipple sensation after your breast implants. Many women believe that the loss of sensation occurs no matter the size of the breast implant.

Actually, it’s much more likely to occur if you decide to have large breast implants in relation to the available breast skin envelope. In English, this means if the size of implant you choose is a tight fit under the skin, you have a higher risk of losing nipple sensation.
Those that choose smaller cup sizes that place less stress on the area have a much less likely chance of losing nipple sensation.

A study involving 20 women who had breast implants were followed up one year later, and it was found that nipple sensation was significantly reduced as breast implant size increased, confirming what was believed prior to the study.

There however, was no difference in sensory based on the type of insertion with the exception of TUBA (through the belly button breast augmentation), which had far less loss of sense. There also was no difference based on implant type. The TUBA or belly button technique had the best results because size relation didn’t matter at all. There simply is no loss of sensation, so certainly worth considering.

For many women the loss of nipple sensation is a big concern, which is why you should discuss this with your plastic surgeon. He or she will be able to tell you what size of implants will provide the least amount or risk of losing nipple sensation.
